CAF launches investigation into Super Eagles’ ordeal at Libyan airport

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed serious concern over the distressing experience faced by Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, at a Libyan airport.

CAF confirmed it has been in contact with both Libyan and Nigerian authorities after learning that the Super Eagles and their technical staff were stranded for several hours under unacceptable conditions at an airport where they had allegedly been instructed to land by Libyan authorities.

CAF is treating the incident with utmost gravity and has referred the matter to its Disciplinary Board for further investigation. The board will determine any violations of CAF statutes and regulations and take appropriate action against those responsible.

The ordeal occurred ahead of the return leg of the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, following Nigeria’s earlier 1-0 victory against the Mediterranean Knights in Akwa Ibom. The situation prompted outrage from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and raised concerns about the safety and welfare of teams traveling for international fixtures.

CAF assured that it is committed to ensuring the welfare of all teams and will not tolerate any incidents that violate its rules or compromise the dignity and safety of athletes.

The disciplinary board’s investigation is expected to shed light on the circumstances that led to the Super Eagles being stranded, and CAF has vowed to take decisive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
