North African giants Egypt could be named the new host of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following Côte d’Ivoire’s withdrawal due to government restrictions.
The Ivorians announced their withdrawal less than a month before the tournament’s commencement, forcing the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to search for a replacement.
Reports indicate that the continent’s football governing body has offered Egypt the opportunity to host the tournament.
With the competition set for April 26 to May 18, 2025, and serving as a qualifier for the U-20 FIFA World Cup in Chile, CAF has been racing to secure a new host.
Egypt, known for its strong football infrastructure and experience in hosting major tournaments, has emerged as a top candidate.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) recently met with CAF Secretary General Véron Mosengo-Omba in Cairo to discuss organizing the competition.
While no official confirmation has been made, sources indicate Egypt is in final-stage talks with CAF and could soon be announced as the new host.
