CAFCL: Sundowns complete Remo Stars’ demolition with 2-0 win

By Tosin Omojola –

South African club, Mamelodi Sundowns, on Sunday confirmed their superiority over Nigerian league champions, Remo Stars, beating the Ikenne-based side 2-0 in the return leg of their CAF Champions League second-round tie.

Remo Stars’ hopes of salvaging pride in the competition, after suffering a humiliating 5-1 first-leg defeat in Abeokuta, were dashed with the defeat to Sundowns in Pretoria.

The Nigerian side came into the second leg of the second preliminary round with a mountain to climb after the huge first-leg loss at home.

Despite their determination to put up a better fight, the experience and quality of the South African champions proved too much to handle.

First-half goals from Nuno Santos and Peter Shalulile sealed a comfortable 2-0 win for Sundowns, completing a 7-1 aggregate victory over the Sky Blue Stars.

With the result, Remo Stars bowed out of the competition, while Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the lucrative group stage of the CAF Champions League.

Nigeria can, however, take solace in the fact that the country’s other representatives in the competition, Rivers United, scaled through to the group stage after a 3-1 aggregate win over Black Bulls of Mozambique.

Recall that the two Nigerian flagbearers in the CAF Confederation Cup, Abia Warriors and Kwara United, crashed out in the first round of the competition.
