Cameroon dismisses rumors of Paul Biya’s death

Authorities in Cameroon have reassured the public that President Paul Biya is alive and in good health, following widespread rumors about his demise.
In a statement read on state radio, the country’s Minister of Communications, René Emmanuel Sadi, affirmed that the 91-year-old leader is “well and alive” and will return to the country soon.
Supporting the official stance, André Magnus Ekoumou, Cameroon’s ambassador to France, issued a separate statement dispelling reports that President Biya had been hospitalized in Clamart, France.
He expressed frustration over the spread of these unfounded rumors, clarifying that the president has never been admitted to any hospital in France. The ambassador confirmed that Biya is currently in Geneva, Switzerland.
In addition, Cameroon’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Grégoire Owona, emphasized that the government would take legal action against those responsible for spreading false news about the president’s health.
Owona stressed that appropriate institutions must hold accountable those attempting to deceive the public, regardless of where these rumors originate.
The statements from government officials come as part of a coordinated effort to counter rumors surrounding Biya’s health and assert the president’s continued leadership.
