CANUK debunks extortion claims against Nigerian High Commission in London

The Central Association of Nigerians in the United Kingdom (CANUK) has dismissed reports alleging extortion in the processing of Emergency Travel Certificates (ETCs) and passports at the Nigerian High Commission in London, describing the claims as inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement signed by CANUK Publicity Secretary, Rose P. Graham, and Assistant Publicity Secretary, Tekena Douglas, the association said the clarification became necessary following a viral video by Dr. Chido A.A, who alleged that an ETC was issued at an inflated fee of £132.

CANUK explained that the official fees remain £120 for an Emergency Travel Certificate, with an additional optional charge of £12 for applicants who prefer Royal Mail secure postage. For passport issuance or renewal, the statutory fees are $230 for a 64-page booklet and $150 for a 32-page booklet.

The group stressed that the ETC is not “an ordinary paper,” as suggested in the video, but a specially printed and crested document with the Nigerian Coat of Arms and embedded security features for authentication at airports and border control points.

Addressing the specific case raised, CANUK confirmed that Dr. Chido had applied for two ETCs and opted for postage services, making his total payment of £264 fully consistent with the official fee structure.

Hon. Judith Akuta, CANUK’s 1st Vice Chair (Passport Matters), urged Nigerians in the UK to process ETCs and passports only through the Nigerian High Commission to avoid misinformation, inflated charges, or delays that often arise when unauthorised intermediaries are used.

Speaking on behalf of the association, CANUK Chairman, Hon. Ily Maisanda, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the High Commission and the Nigerian community in the UK to ensure transparency, accountability, and efficient service delivery.

For further information on passport and ETC applications, Nigerians in the UK were advised to contact Hon. Akuta directly via official CANUK channels.
