Chelsea’s title hopes falter in shock 3–1 defeat at Leeds

Chelsea’s Premier League title hopes suffered a major setback on Wednesday night as struggling Leeds United secured a stunning 3–1 victory at Elland Road.

The Blues delivered a lethargic first-half performance, allowing Leeds to take control with goals from Jaka Bijol and Ao Tanaka. Pedro Neto pulled one back early in the second half, but Chelsea’s hopes of a comeback collapsed when Dominic Calvert-Lewin capitalised on a defensive blunder to seal the win.

Leeds, who had lost their previous four league matches, struck first in the sixth minute when Anton Stach’s corner found Bijol, who out-jumped Liam Delap to head past Robert Sanchez.

Chelsea, missing suspended midfielder Moises Caicedo, looked disjointed and struggled to cope with Leeds’ intensity. Their woes deepened shortly before the break when Tanaka unleashed a fierce strike from the edge of the box to double the hosts’ lead.

Neto came off the bench to reduce the deficit in the 50th minute, finishing from close range after Jamie Gittens’ cross. Chelsea pushed for an equaliser, with Cole Palmer and Alejandro Garnacho combining to create chances, but they failed to convert.

The night worsened for the visitors in the 72nd minute when a disastrous mix-up in defence handed Leeds their third. Malo Gusto’s misplaced pass put Tosin Adarabioyo under pressure, and his hurried back-pass was intercepted by Noah Okafor. Although Sanchez initially blocked Okafor’s effort, Calvert-Lewin tapped into an empty net to secure the victory.

The loss — Chelsea’s first in eight matches across all competitions — leaves them nine points behind leaders Arsenal, further denting their title ambitions.
