Children’s Day: Tinubu orders stronger school protection measures in high-risk areas

President Bola Tinubu has directed a major strengthening of school protection systems in high-risk areas across the country, including updated vulnerability mapping, improved coordination between state governments and security agencies, and faster emergency response links between schools and local security units.
In a statement marking Children’s Day on May 27, President Tinubu said the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with state governments, has been tasked with deepening the implementation of the Safe Schools framework, with clear reporting structures, defined responsibilities and strict timelines.
He said every school in vulnerable communities must have a clear safety protocol, including designated contacts, evacuation procedures, and response plans in the event of security threats.
“I have also directed the strengthening of school protection measures in high-risk areas,” the President stated, adding that the measures will include “updated school vulnerability mapping, closer coordination between state governments and security commands, rapid response links between schools and local security units, and stronger community-based early warning systems.”
Tinubu’s message also focused heavily on the ongoing issue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in parts of the country, particularly in Oyo and Borno states, saying government efforts to secure their release would be intensified.
He ordered security agencies to sustain and expand coordinated rescue operations, stressing that such missions must be intelligence-driven and focused on the safe recovery of victims.
The President also emphasized the need for stronger post-rescue support for survivors of abduction and violence, including medical care, counselling, education and structured reintegration into society.
Beyond government action, he called for stronger community involvement in child protection, urging parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and local groups to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity around schools.
