Commanding officer, six soldiers killed in Borno IED attack — Military

A commanding officer and six soldiers have been killed following an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Borno State.
The incident occurred late on April 12, 2026, when troops of Sector 3, Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, came under what was described as an isolated terrorist attack at the Charlie 13 location in Monguno.
According to a statement issued by the military, troops engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing the terrorists to retreat while maintaining control of the area.
However, the commanding officer was killed alongside six other personnel after his vehicle struck an IED while he was moving to the troops’ location to assess the situation.
The military described the officer’s actions as a demonstration of courage and leadership, noting that he moved towards the frontline despite the risks.
It added that his conduct reflected a strong commitment to duty and the welfare of his troops.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the officer and the soldiers, describing them as gallant personnel who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.
The military affirmed that their sacrifice would remain a lasting symbol of dedication within the Armed Forces and the country.
