Continental Gymnastics Cup: TIG represents Nigeria in Portugal

By Tosin Omojola

Tony International Gymnastics (TIG), Nigeria’s premier gymnastics club, is proudly representing the country at the Continental Gymnastics Cup in Portugal. This prestigious event provides athletes with the chance to earn points toward Olympic qualification, offering an invaluable platform to showcase their skills and gain critical points for international rankings.

Representing TIG at this competition are two standout athletes, Angela Marinoni and Desire Ehnahoro. Originally, the club had planned to send a team of eight, including Oluwasemilore Praise Adeoye, Chiwendu Chenille Okpandu, Chimamanda Onyeabor, Chukwumnadigide Elah Oguegbulu, Francisca Chiagoziem Okpanku, and Desire Oluebube Enahoro-Agbi. However, due to visa and financial challenges, only Marinoni and Ehnahoro were able to travel, despite the entire team’s registration.

Reflecting on their performance, TIG President Anthony Asuquo praised the athletes’ resilience and determination. “I’m incredibly proud of Angela and Desire for their dedication, following their routines, and achieving gold, silver, and bronze medals among themselves. Competing in an Olympic scoring event gives them invaluable experience against athletes they may face at the Olympics.”

Asuquo emphasized TIG’s commitment to providing international exposure for Nigerian athletes despite economic challenges. “We work hard to give our athletes the opportunities they need. Although we hoped to bring a full team, current circumstances made it difficult.”

He expressed optimism that the involvement of experienced sports administrators like Mallam Shehu Dikko could usher in a new era of growth and success for Nigerian sports.

This year’s Continental Gymnastics Cup features 19 clubs from around the world, all competing for crucial points on the path to Olympic qualification.
