President Bola Tinubu has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a “controversial but extraordinary leader” while acknowledging his contributions to Nigeria’s development as the elder statesman marks his 88th birthday.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Tinubu praised Obasanjo’s influence on national affairs, noting that while his interventions are sometimes contentious, they have played a significant role in shaping policies and holding leaders accountable.
“Sometimes controversial, former President Obasanjo’s regular interventions in national affairs have helped shape public policies and serve as a check on leadership,” Tinubu stated.
He commended Obasanjo’s commitment to national unity, peace, and progress, expressing hope for his continued strength and wisdom. “At 88, the former president remains active. I pray that God Almighty grants him more years so the nation and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and experience,” he added.
Highlighting Obasanjo’s legacy, Tinubu credited him with having a lasting influence on both national and global affairs, describing him as an “ambassador of global peace and a troubleshooter” whose work in conflict resolution and governance advocacy has earned him widespread respect.
The president also recalled Obasanjo’s historic role in ending the Nigerian Civil War when, as a colonel in the Nigerian Army, he received the instrument of surrender from Biafran Army Commander Col. Philip Effiong in 1970. Tinubu further praised Obasanjo’s leadership following the assassination of General Murtala Muhammed in 1976 and his role in transitioning Nigeria to civilian rule in 1979.
“General Obasanjo implemented critical policies and reforms that profoundly impacted the lives of many Nigerians. As head of state, he consistently demonstrated a selfless commitment to national unity, peace, and progress,” Tinubu stated.
