Corruption, poor leadership Nigeria’s biggest problems – SDP Acting National Chairman

The Acting National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dr Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, has described corruption as the single greatest problem undermining Nigeria, saying poor leadership has crippled the country and deprived citizens of hope, security and prosperity.
Speaking in a recent interview, Gombe said Nigeria’s challenges are not accidental but stem from entrenched corruption, bad governance and fraudulent practices within government and political parties.
He accused the current administration of implementing policies that inflict hardship on ordinary Nigerians, arguing that such measures have worsened poverty and deepened economic suffering nationwide.
Gombe warned that Nigeria’s democracy is under serious threat, citing widespread voter apathy and low electoral participation as troubling signs. “A president elected with less than nine per cent of registered voters is unacceptable. It shows we are not serious about our future,” he said.
The SDP chairman said the party is repositioning itself as a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections, drawing strength from its history and political legacy.
He called on Nigerian youths and women—whom he described as the most affected by current policies—to rally behind the SDP and take ownership of the nation’s future, stressing that the party is open to Nigerians with the capacity, character and courage to lead.
“Defection of governors is not our focus. Some defect because of skeletons in their cupboards. In the SDP, we have no skeletons and no fear,” Gombe said.
He concluded with a call for national renewal, urging Nigerians to register, vote and reclaim the country, while reaffirming the SDP’s commitment to transparency, accountability and service.
