The Council of State has unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC).

The announcement was made by Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, shortly after the Council’s meeting held on Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Governor Sani disclosed that the appointment followed the recommendation of President Bola Tinubu, who chaired the meeting attended by former Presidents Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, alongside serving governors and other members of the Council.

In addition to Dr. Yusuf’s appointment, the Council also approved the nomination of Alhaji Tonga Betara Bularafa as the Federal Commissioner representing Yobe State in the National Population Commission. Both appointments, according to the governor, were unanimously endorsed by the Council.

Governor Sani further revealed that the meeting considered and approved recommendations on the prerogative of mercy presented by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. The Council granted clemency to 175 inmates, including 82 granted presidential pardon, 65 with reduced prison sentences, and seven whose death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment.

Governor Uba Sani emphasized that both the appointments and the clemency approvals were collectively and unanimously agreed upon by all members of the Council of State.
