Court recognises Nenadi Usman as Labour Party chairman, notifies INEC

The Federal High Court in Abuja has upheld the removal of Comrade Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party and affirmed Senator Nenadi Usman as the lawful leader of the party.

In its ruling, the court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Nenadi Usman-led national caretaker committee as the authentic leadership of the Labour Party.

The judgment was delivered by Justice Lifu and was confirmed by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who disclosed the development in a post on X on Wednesday. Effiong said he was present in court when the decision was handed down in a related case.

According to him, the court held that the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee remains the only valid and lawful leadership structure of the Labour Party. The judge further ruled that Julius Abure’s tenure as national chairman had expired, in line with an earlier judgment of the Supreme Court.

The court consequently directed INEC to immediately recognise Senator Nenadi Usman as the party’s leader, effectively ending Abure’s claim to the position.
