Customs seizes 140 rifles, cannabis products worth N373.8m at Lagos port

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a container concealing components of more than 140 pump-action rifles and seized cannabis-infused products valued at N373.8 million at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.
The NCS made this known in a statement by its national public relations officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, who said the rifle components were preliminarily identified as Jojeff pump-action rifles.
According to Maiwada, the container was flagged through the service’s intelligence-driven risk management system, leading to the discovery of the concealed rifle components.
He said two suspects had been arrested in connection with the seizure, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend another suspect who remains at large.

In a separate operation, customs officers intercepted 109 cartons of Delta-8 cannabis-infused pre-roll cookies, 125 cartons of gummies and 73 cartons of cannabis-infused cookies concealed among other imported goods.
The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, warned that criminal networks could exploit Nigeria’s borders during the upcoming election cycle, stressing that the service would intensify its security operations.
Adeniyi also pledged to tackle internal complicity within the service, while urging Nigerians to provide credible intelligence to support efforts by the NCS and other security agencies to combat smuggling and protect the nation’s borders.
