Lagos State on Tuesday received 80,000 bags of rice from the Dangote Foundation as a gesture of goodwill during the Ramadan season. Each bag, weighing 10kg, was distributed to support vulnerable residents.

Receiving the gifts, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, praised the foundation for prioritizing the welfare of the people beyond profit-making.

“The distribution of rice demonstrates that the leadership of the Dangote Foundation prioritizes the well-being of the people over the pursuit of wealth. Aliko Dangote is a Nigerian who has chosen to be different. While he has many choices, he has made the right one by caring for the vulnerable,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He expressed gratitude to Dangote for supporting government efforts, especially during challenging economic times. “With global disruptions affecting economies worldwide, it is a tough time to be in leadership, and we deeply appreciate this support,” he added.

The governor encouraged other wealthy Nigerians to emulate Dangote’s generosity, emphasizing that the rice distribution aligns with the state’s initiatives to alleviate economic hardship.

“This is a special month of fasting for both Christians and Muslims, as Ramadan and Lent coincide in March. One of the best ways to honor the essence of this season is through giving, which is exactly what the Dangote Foundation has demonstrated,” he noted.

Sanwo-Olu also highlighted Lagos State’s food initiative, Ounje Eko, which provides subsidized food across all local government areas, with the government covering 10% of the cost for buyers.

“We sincerely appreciate Mr. Dangote and his foundation for consistently supporting Lagos State. We urge all well-meaning Nigerians to embrace this spirit of giving and contribute to society,” he concluded.
