Date for council poll in Osun not yet fixed, says OSSIEC chairman

…PDP again warns Oyetola

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo

Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) said it is yet to announce any date for the conduct of local government election in the state.

Chairman of the commission, Otunba Segun Oladitan in a statement made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Monday described as baseless and unfounded the rumors making the rounds that the election has been slated for October 29, 2022.

Oladitan stressed that the only recognized body to announce the date for the local government election is the Commission, saying that any date coming from any other source aside OSIEC should be disregarded by the public.

He added that at the appropriate time, the Commission will come out with the election guidelines to put a stop to the unnecessary rumors being peddled around.

He expressed the commitment of OSSIEC to conduct a credible and acceptable LG election in the state at the appropriate time.

Meanwhile, Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has again warned the Governor Adegboyega Oyetola and the OSSIEC against going ahead with the purported plan to conduct local government election in the State.

The PDP, in a statement signed by Oladele Olabamiji, its Director of Media, also described the purported election as unlawful, illegal and criminal.

The statement reminded the governor and the state electoral body of a pending suit before the Federal High Court, Osogbo, in FHC/OS/CS/94/2022, by which the party is challenging OSSIEC on the planned local government election, while at the same time praying the court to restrain INEC from releasing voters register to OSSIEC for reason of non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 with respect to giving notice of elections, nomination of candidates, publication of names among others.
