Davido pledges upgrade of Babcock University music department

Afropop star, Davido, has announced plans to upgrade the music department of his alma mater, Babcock University, with a standalone building and modern facilities to support creativity and talent development.

Davido made the disclosure during a visit to the university on Sunday, where he expressed his desire to see the music department upgraded into a standalone building equipped with modern facilities. He described music and creativity as “the new oil” in Nigeria.

The singer said he would work with the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Afolarin Ojewole, to complete the project before the end of the year.

“I just personally built an office in Lagos; it’s a high-class, standard music studio, so we are ready to donate and give back to the school and make sure we have proper, standard equipment because music is oil right now in Nigeria,” he said.

Speaking on education, Davido stressed that it was wrong to describe education as a scam, noting that formal education remained valuable despite the success stories of some people who did not attend school.

The singer, who graduated from Babcock University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music in 2015, said he was proud of his academic background and often tells colleagues that he went to school.

Davido also recounted the difficulty of combining academics with his music career, adding that support from his family and some lecturers helped him complete his studies. He added that discipline was one of the major lessons he gained from the university.

Welcoming the artiste, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Afolarin Ojewole, described Davido as a worthy ambassador of the institution and commended the Adeleke family for its longstanding support for the university and the Adventist Church.
