Days to Edo election, Obaseki doles out N1billion grant to market women
- Promises another N1billion, if Ighodalo wins
In what appears to be a last minute move to curry more grassroot support, ahead of the Edo governorship election set for next Saturday, September 21, Governor Godwin Obaseki, has announced plans to distribute N1billion naira as grants to traders.
The governor stated that the financial assistance is a thank you for the market women’s steadfast support and commitment to his administration over the years.
Governor Obaseki made the announcement at an annual event in Benin, organised in his honour by the Edo market women.
To ensure justice, he declared that the distribution of the funds will be managed honestly and in conjunction with leaders of the market who are women.
Obaseki also promised to double the award in the event that Dr Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, wins the upcoming election.
He went on to say how much he appreciated their promise to back Ighodalo in the next election.
The market women’s leader, Madam Blacky Ogiemen, responded by praising the Obaseki administration for its accomplishments and restating her group’s allegiance to the PDP.
She said that because they believe Ighodalo can carry on Obaseki’s legacy, the traders have already decided to support him.
