Depleted Super Eagles ready to face Rwanda in ‘dead rubber match’

The Super Eagles are set to take on the Wasps of Rwanda on Monday in their final match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Despite the game being a dead rubber, Coach Augustine Eguavoen has declared the team ready to finish the campaign on a high note, even in the absence of three key players.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili was released from camp on Friday following the unfortunate passing of his father. Similarly, defenders Ola Aina and Ademola Lookman were also excused from the squad for specific reasons, which Eguavoen addressed during a press conference at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Eguavoen explained that Ola Aina’s release was based on a pre-existing agreement with his club, Nottingham Forest. “Before our game against Benin Republic in Côte d’Ivoire, I had discussions with Nottingham Forest officials and received a request from their manager, Nuno, to release Aina if we qualified after that match,” Eguavoen said.
“Maintaining relationships is key, so we honored the agreement, knowing we have other players who can step in.”
The coach also justified Lookman’s release, citing fitness concerns. “Ademola Lookman is slightly injured and mentioned he could only play at 70% fitness. He pleaded to be excused, and while I could have insisted he stay, maintaining a good relationship is important. Based on that understanding, we allowed him to leave,” Eguavoen added.
Despite these absences, Eguavoen reassured fans that the team has sufficient depth. “We have capable players to fill in. This is a chance for others to step up,” he stated. The changes provide an opportunity for Maduka Okoye and Bright Osayi to make their debuts in the qualifying series.
The Super Eagles, already qualified for the tournament in Morocco, aim to end their campaign in style. Rwanda, on the other hand, lost their last match at home to Libya, which ended their hopes of qualification. This result secured Nigeria’s ticket even before their crucial victory against Benin Republic.
Monday’s match, while inconsequential in terms of qualification, holds significance for pride and history. The Super Eagles have won two of their previous six encounters with Rwanda, while the remaining four ended in stalemates.
The match kicks off at 5 p.m. Nigeria time, with fans expecting a strong performance despite the team’s depleted roster.
