To actualize the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE), there is a need for bridge-building among stakeholders, as well as a research-based approach to unlock untapped talents, drive grassroots sports development, and ultimately boost the sports economy. A well-managed sports sector will also serve as a unifying force in the nation.

This was the view of the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, while delivering his speech at the 50th Anniversary and 9th Convocation Ceremony of the National Institute for Sports (NIS).

In his words, “The path to greater sports development demands unity and cooperation. It must be emphasized that sports serve as a bridge-builder. I encourage all stakeholders in the sports sector to embrace collaboration, as it is through our collective efforts that we can achieve our shared goals.

“Let us continue to leverage our diverse talents and expertise, drive innovation in sports training and research, and create opportunities for our athletes to shine on the global stage. With the structural reorganization of the Federal Ministry of Sports into the National Sports Commission (NSC), we are poised to reset, refocus, and relaunch Nigerian sports through the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE).

This initiative will transform our sports ecosystem from a competition-driven model to a value-adding, development-focused industry that promotes national unity and socio-economic growth.”

Commending the Institute’s management for fulfilling its strategic mandate of producing competent coaches, managers, and administrators, Dikko emphasized their crucial role in achieving the Commission’s objectives as directed by the President.

“Students now have access to state-of-the-art facilities that meet global standards, positioning them to compete on the world stage. The leadership and infrastructure deficits are gradually being addressed. We must recognize the pivotal role of NIS in training sports coaches and managers, and it is essential for the institution to maintain and enhance its commitment to excellence in sports performance.

“I am pleased to learn about the special grassroots football coaching program organized by the National Institute for Sports in collaboration with the Lagos State Football Association. This partnership is a commendable initiative that aligns with the NIS mandate and serves as a model for sports development in the country.”

While congratulating the institution on its 50th anniversary, Mallam Dikko stressed the need to upgrade the NIS into a full-fledged University of Sports, assuring that the NSC would champion the process.

He also charged the graduating students to be agents of positive change in the sector.

“Armed with knowledge and skills, you are the future leaders and change-makers in the sports industry. I encourage you to uphold the values of discipline, integrity, and excellence instilled in you by NIS,” he concluded.

Mallam Dikko also congratulated recipients of the institution’s Fellowship and special recognition awards. The Fellowship awardees include Senator Simon Bako Lalong, Hon. Kunle Soname, Dr. Danladi Bako, Ms. Lucy Ejike, Mr. Allen Onyema, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, and the late Dr. Awoture Eleyae (posthumously).

Ace broadcaster Modele Sharafa Yusuf and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale, received special recognition awards.
