Donald Trump to oversee 2026 World Cup after presidential victory

Politics and sports have become increasingly intertwined, especially at major international events. It is now confirmed that Donald Trump, whose administration played a key role in securing the joint bid by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to host the 2026 World Cup, will be in office when the tournament begins.
Back in 2018, when the U.S. spearheaded the bid, it seemed unlikely that Trump would still be in the White House in 2026. Even if he had won a second term in 2020, his presidency would have concluded by now.
However, after reclaiming the presidency with a victory over Kamala Harris, Trump will now see the event take place under his administration.
Notably, Trump has now twice won presidential races against female candidates—first against Hillary Clinton in 2016 and now against Kamala Harris in 2024—delaying the possibility of the first female American president.
Trump’s tenure will also extend to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking a significant period of high-profile sports events hosted under his leadership.
