Don’t criticise if you haven’t performed, Speaker Obasa urges aspirants

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. (Hon) Mudashiru Obasa, has urged aspiring political leaders to exercise caution in criticising those in office, noting that leadership requires experience and understanding.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Secondary School, Abanraje, the speaker emphasised that individuals seeking public office should avoid condemning the performance of others without first understanding the realities of governance.

According to him, leadership comes with complex challenges, and it is unfair for aspirants to make sweeping judgments without having walked the same path.

He further dismissed claims that the country has not witnessed progress, insisting that such assertions are misleading and not reflective of current realities.

The speaker cited improvements in the exchange rate as an example, noting that while the naira once traded at about ₦1,800 to one dollar, the situation has since improved.

He maintained that such developments indicate that efforts at economic reform are yielding gradual results, contrary to claims by critics.

Furthermore, he advised aspiring politicians to focus on grassroots engagement and meaningful service, stressing that public support is earned through tangible impact.

He pointed to Honorable Kehinde Joseph as an example of a leader who has built credibility by working closely with his constituents, urging others to adopt a similar approach.
