‘Don’t lose momentum on constitution review’ – Oyo Speaker tells NASS

The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has called on the National Assembly to expedite the ongoing constitution review process.

Speaking during the 2025 National Assembly Open Week at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, Ogundoyin expressed concern over delays affecting the review. He emphasized the need for timely completion to ensure amendments are implemented before the next general elections.

“We respectfully urge the National Assembly to sustain the current momentum on the constitutional review process. Any loss of this momentum, however unintended, risks diminishing the impact and relevance of the reforms,” he said.

Ogundoyin commended the National Assembly leadership and the House of Representatives for upholding the tradition of the Open Week, describing it as a bold initiative promoting transparency, openness, and participatory democracy.

Representing Speakers from the 36 State Houses of Assembly, he reaffirmed the commitment of state legislatures to collaborate with the National Assembly on reforms that reflect the aspirations of Nigerians.

“We fully identify with the vision of openness, accountability, and participatory governance. As a Conference, we are ready to collaborate to ensure the review process reflects the yearnings of Nigerians,” he added.

He further stressed the importance of inter-legislative cooperation between the federal and state levels, noting that Nigeria’s democratic stability depends largely on the independence and effectiveness of legislative institutions.

Ogundoyin concluded by appreciating the National Assembly for the invitation to participate in the Open Week and expressed optimism for deeper collaboration to strengthen Nigeria’s constitutional framework.
