D’Tigers begin Afrobasket title chase against Madagascar

By Tosin Omojola –
Nigeria’s men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, will kick off their 2025 Afrobasket campaign today (Wednesday) in Angola.
The tournament comes just days after their female counterparts, D’Tigress, claimed their seventh title in Côte d’Ivoire — their fifth in a row — in the women’s version of the championship.
It has been a decade since D’Tigers won their only Afrobasket title in 2015, and the team, inspired by the recent success of D’Tigress, will be looking to end the long wait for another triumph.
Drawn in Group B alongside defending champions Tunisia, Madagascar, and Cameroon, Nigeria will open their campaign against Madagascar, hoping for a strong start.
The team will face Tunisia on Friday before wrapping up their preliminary group stage duties against Cameroon on Sunday.
This year’s edition is the 31st, with Angola hosting the tournament. The host nation remains the most successful side in the competition’s history, boasting 11 titles.
The championship features 16 teams and began on Tuesday. It will run until Sunday, August 24.
