D’Tigress to face Angola or Cameroon in 2025 Afrobasket quarter-finals

Defending champions Nigeria’s D’Tigress will on Wednesday find out their quarter-final opponents when Cameroon face Angola in the playoff round of the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
The Nigerian team, who booked a spot in the quarter-finals after a hard-fought win over Mozambique on Monday, returned to training on Tuesday under the watchful eyes of Coach Rena Wakama, focusing on shooting drills and defensive tactics.
Ahead of their Thursday clash against either Angola or Cameroon, the team’s morale has been lifted by the recent gestures of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu towards the Super Falcons, who were rewarded with cash, houses, and national honours for their performance.
Team captain Amy Okonkwo said the recognition given to the Falcons has served as a motivation for D’Tigress to strive for similar glory and return home as African champions.
“We were in the locker room after our game against Mozambique when we heard the news of Mr President’s announcement. It shows how much sports is now being taken seriously in the country,” Okonkwo said.
She also praised the National Sports Commission for prioritising the welfare of Nigerian athletes, noting that such support goes a long way in boosting performance and commitment.
Looking ahead to their next game, Okonkwo said neither Cameroon nor Angola would be an easy opponent, stressing that the team is focused on raising its game as the tournament progresses.
“Afrobasket is getting tougher every year. The competition keeps improving, and we know every team wants to beat Nigeria. We are fully aware of the challenges ahead and are staying focused on our mission.”
