Ebonyi governor suspends three commissioners for absenteeism

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has suspended three commissioners for one month over absenteeism from the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held on March 17, 2025.

The affected officials include Solomon Azi (Commissioner for Grants and Donor Agencies), Victor Chukwu (Commissioner for Environment), and Ikeuwa Omebe (Commissioner for Rural Development).

Announcing the decision on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Jude Okpor, stated that the three officials failed to obtain permission for their absence.

He added that the governor has directed the suspension of all privileges attached to their offices for the duration of their suspension.

Governor Nwifuru also cautioned public servants against negligence and warned contractors handling government projects to adhere to their contractual obligations. He emphasized that the state would take legal action to ensure compliance.

Meanwhile, the SEC approved the construction of a staff quarters, a female hostel, and a health clinic at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Permanent Orientation Camp in Afikpo as part of efforts to improve infrastructure for corps members.

In addition, the government honored the law team from Ebonyi State University, which won the 33rd Christof Heyns African Moot Court competition in Kigali, Rwanda.

The team—comprising Michael Agu-Ebeke, Cynthia Ibor, and their instructor, Dr. Chioma Iteshi—received the prestigious Ebonyi State Honours Award and a cash prize of ₦3 million each for their achievement in defeating 68 Anglophone and 15 Francophone teams in the competition.
