Edo 2024: PDP alleges plot by Presidency to rig gubernatorial election

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Presidency of plotting to interfere in and manipulate the upcoming September 21 governorship election through the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Department of State Services (DSS). The party claims these efforts are aimed at ensuring a victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released by the Edo PDP Chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, the party alleged that $2 million had been released by the NSA to the APC’s candidate for vote-buying and bribing security agencies and electoral officials.

Aziegbemi expressed the PDP’s commitment to a peaceful and credible election, but warned against attempts to tamper with the democratic process.

“It has come to our notice that directives have been issued from the Presidency to the NSA and DSS to disrupt and manipulate the Edo gubernatorial election in favor of the APC,” the statement read.

Aziegbemi further alleged that security forces were being deployed to PDP strongholds, including those of Governor Godwin Obaseki and the PDP candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, in an effort to destabilize the voting process.

The PDP also claimed that some electoral officials in key areas are members of the APC, tasked with delaying results and inciting violence to create an atmosphere conducive to rigging.

Aziegbemi further accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials of being complicit in the plot, citing secret meetings involving APC leaders, including Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma.

Aziegbemi called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act as a leader for all Nigerians, not just the APC, and ensure a free and fair election in Edo State. He also urged civil society organizations, international observers, and the diplomatic community to closely monitor the election and help prevent potential manipulation.

The PDP concluded by reaffirming its commitment to a credible electoral process, insisting that its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, is poised for a decisive victory, and that no amount of rigging would deter the will of the Edo people.
