Edo govt petitions IGP over recent political chaos

The Edo State Government has filed a petition with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun concerning the violent incidents that disrupted law and order on Thursday, July 18, 2024.
The government has accused reinstated Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu of orchestrating the chaos under the guise of enforcing a Federal High Court judgment from Abuja, despite a pending stay of execution and appeal.
The state government alleges that Shaibu hired armed thugs, resulting in the death of Police Inspector Akor Onuh in Benin City.
In a petition signed by State Solicitor General Prof. Faith Osadolor, on behalf of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the government detailed Shaibu’s alleged actions, claiming he recruited heavily armed individuals, including notable figures like Tony Adun (aka Tony Kabaka) and others. These individuals reportedly caused extensive destruction and contributed to the officer’s death.
The government’s petition, titled “Request to Investigate a Case of Conspiracy to Commit Murder, Murder, Malicious Damage to Property, Breach of Public Peace and Assault Occasioning Harm by Former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Hon. Philip Shaibu and his Cohorts,” calls for a thorough investigation into the matter. It was addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Zone 5.
In the petition, the Edo State Government expressed condolences to the Nigeria Police Force for the loss of Inspector Akor Onuh, praising his bravery and dedication.
The government urged the Police to investigate Shaibu and his associates and to ensure justice is served if they are found culpable.
The petition outlines the events leading up to the violence, noting a Federal High Court judgment on July 17, 2024, which nullified Shaibu’s removal as Deputy Governor.
Despite the pending appeal and a motion for a stay of execution, Shaibu allegedly mobilized armed thugs on July 18, 2024, causing widespread chaos, including an attack at the Benin Airport and destruction of public and private properties. The government claims these actions aimed to make Edo State ungovernable.
The government’s statement highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive investigation to address the violence and restore order in the state.
