Edun commends Lagos sports administration at Boxing Hall of Fame event

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and President of the Nigerian Boxing Federation, Mr Wale Edun, has commended the Lagos State Government for the renewed momentum in sports administration, particularly in grassroots talent development.

Edun gave the commendation on Boxing Day at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Lagos, while speaking on the sidelines of the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame (LBHF) Governor’s Belt event. He praised the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), led by its Director General, Mr Lekan Fatodu, for prioritising talent discovery and structured development at the foundational level of boxing.

According to the minister, the approach adopted by the commission reflects a clear commitment to building sustainable growth in sports by investing in young athletes and creating pathways for their progression.

Responding, Fatodu, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the event, expressed appreciation for the minister’s remarks, describing them as a validation of the commission’s ongoing efforts. He attributed the commission’s drive and effectiveness to the governor’s passion and strong political will for sports development.

“We are deeply encouraged by the Honourable Minister Wale Edun’s kind words, as they reinforce that our strategic focus on grassroots talent identification is yielding the desired atmosphere for growth,” Fatodu said.

He added that the renewed energy being witnessed in Lagos sports was a direct result of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s commitment and support, noting that the administration views sports not just as recreation but as a vital tool for youth empowerment and development.

“The governor’s enabling support allows the commission to aggressively pursue grassroots initiatives, ensuring that the vast potential among our youth, particularly in boxing and other sports, is not left untapped,” Fatodu said.

The successful hosting of the LBHF Governor’s Belt 2025 further highlighted Lagos State’s growing reputation as a centre for organised sports development, offering young boxers a credible platform to showcase their talents and reaffirming the state government’s long-term commitment to excellence in sports.
