Atiku, Sanwo-Olu not linked to investigation of Aisha Achimugu – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted media reports suggesting that its investigation of Aisha Achimugu is linked to political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
In a statement issued on Friday by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the anti-graft agency clarified that Achimugu is being investigated solely for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering. The EFCC also confirmed that she has been declared wanted.
“The investigations of Achimugu have no correlation of any kind with the two political actors. She is being investigated for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering and has since been declared wanted by the Commission,” the statement read.
The EFCC revealed that its probe into Achimugu began in 2022. Although she obtained a court injunction to prevent her arrest, investigation, or detention, the commission successfully challenged the ruling. On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, a Federal High Court in Abuja vacated the injunction.
According to the ruling, “No court has the power to stop the investigative powers of the Police or EFCC or any agency established under our laws to investigate crimes when there is reasonable suspicion of the commission of a crime or ample evidence of an offence by a suspect.”
In addition, the court upheld the interim forfeiture of Achimugu’s assets, which were suspected to be proceeds of crime, and dismissed her lawsuit as lacking merit.
The EFCC emphasized that its investigation has no connection to any political engagements or transactions. The commission reiterated its commitment to impartiality and urged the public to disregard any attempts to politicize its work.
“The EFCC is non-partisan and non-sectarian. We enjoin the public to continue to keep faith with the professionalism of the Commission without imputing any extraneous consideration to its work,” the statement concluded.
