EFCC grants VeryDarkMan bail after four days in detention

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has granted administrative bail to popular social media activist Martins Innocent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

VDM was arrested four days ago at a GTBank branch in Abuja, where he had gone to question an unauthorized loan deduction from his mother’s account.

In a statement on Tuesday, May 6, the EFCC disclosed that the activist was apprehended over “grave allegations of financial malfeasance,” following multiple petitions filed against him. The agency also stated that it obtained a remand order to lawfully detain him beyond the 24-hour constitutional limit.

“VDM has been offered administrative bail and will be released once he meets the stipulated conditions,” the EFCC confirmed.

The Commission emphasized that it has the legal authority to detain suspects under investigation and that all due processes were followed.

It added, “The EFCC appreciates the interest of Nigerians in its operations. However, insinuations about its motives should stop. The Commission should be allowed to do its job without fear or favour.”

The agency further clarified that VDM had failed to respond to multiple invitations sent through known addresses and communication channels, which necessitated his arrest.

The EFCC said charges will be filed once investigations are concluded.
