Ekiti 2026: INEC seeks monarchs’ backing for peaceful governorship poll

By Boye Oyeyemi –
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sought the support of traditional rulers in Ekiti State to ensure a peaceful conduct of the June 20 governorship election.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr Bunmi Omoseyindemi, made the appeal on Thursday in Ado Ekiti during a stakeholders’ meeting with monarchs.
Omoseyindemi said the traditional institution remains vital to peace and unity, noting that royal fathers wield strong influence in their communities.
He disclosed that INEC would, from Monday, move its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to the ward level to boost participation and improve access for eligible voters.
The REC added that the commission had begun early preparations, including engagements with political parties on campaign guidelines and conduct, to ensure a credible poll.
He urged monarchs to encourage compliance with electoral laws, discourage violence, and mobilise residents for the CVR exercise to enhance turnout.
Responding, the Chairman of the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers and Ogoga of Ikere Ekiti, Oba Adejimi Adu-Alagbado, assured INEC of the monarchs’ commitment to sustaining peace before, during, and after the election.
