Ekiti court arraigns man over alleged possession of Indian hemp

A 48-year-old man, Chukwudi Emenike, has been arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly possessing a bag of Indian hemp.

The prosecutor, Inspector Sodiq Adeniyi, told the court that Emenike was allegedly found with the substance on September 12, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m. in Omu-Ekiti, within the Ilupeju-Ekiti Magistrate District.

Adeniyi alleged that Emenike was in possession of the substance without lawful authority, contrary to Section 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

He urged the court to consider the allegation in accordance with the relevant provisions of the law.

However, counsel for the defendant, Adunmi Olanipekun, applied for bail, assuring the court that Emenike would not abscond or interfere with the proceedings.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate D.M. Babalogbon granted Emenike bail in the sum of N50,000.

The court also required the defendant to provide one surety in the same amount as part of the bail conditions.

The case was adjourned until October 14, 2026, for hearing.
