Ekiti government orders transport unions to roll back fares

By Boye Oyeyemi –

The Ekiti State Government has directed all transport unions in the state to revert to the fares that were in place before December.

Mr. Kehinde Ajobiewe, the Commissioner for Transportation, gave the directive during a stakeholders’ meeting with leaders of various transport unions in Ado-Ekiti.

Ajobiewe expressed concern over the recent hike in transport charges, describing the current rates as excessive and burdensome to commuters.

He highlighted that charging ₦20,000 for trips from Ado-Ekiti to Lagos and ₦12,000 to Ibadan was unacceptable. The commissioner instructed that fares to Ibadan be reduced to ₦5,000–₦6,000, while the Lagos route should return to ₦10,000–₦11,000.

Ajobiewe also criticised commercial motorcycle operators who currently charge between ₦500 and ₦1,000 per trip, ordering that Okada fares be fixed at ₦300 per trip within the state.

Transport union leaders present at the meeting pledged full compliance with the directive, assuring that fares would immediately revert to the old rates starting Monday, December 22, 2025.

Those in attendance included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Bayo Abulola, and representatives of major unions such as NURTW, RTEAN, NACT, Tricycle Operators, and Okada Riders. They assured the government that transportation would remain fair and accessible during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
