The Ekiti State government under the leadership of Mr Biodun Oyebanji has opened the Ugele Hill and Cave in Ikere Ekiti to tourists as part of efforts to boost revenue generation and develop the state’s tourism potential.

The site, once restricted to annual cultural activities such as the Odun Omo festival, has now been transformed into a public tourist attraction through the intervention of the Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development.

The hill features a historic cave with sections including a natural sitting area, a relaxation space and an inner chamber believed to have served as refuge for ancestors during periods of conflict.

At the opening ceremony on Monday, the governor, represented by his deputy, Mrs Monisade Afuye, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to tourism as a driver of job creation and economic growth.

She said the government would develop the site into a world-class destination while preserving its cultural heritage, expressing optimism that it would generate revenue and stimulate local commerce.

Afuye also assured traditional custodians that their heritage would be protected and urged residents to support the initiative and welcome visitors.

In his remarks, the Director-General of the Bureau of Tourism Development, Wale Ojo-Lanre, said the project would unlock the site’s potential and enhance Ekiti’s reputation as a tourism hub.

Similarly, the Ogoga of Ikere Ekiti, Oba Adejimi Adu-Alagbado, commended the government’s efforts and called for improved access roads, while Senator Babafemi Ojudu pledged support for the site’s development to international standards.
