Ekiti warns residents against bush burning as harmattan begins

By Boye Oyeyemi –
The Ekiti State Government has cautioned residents to avoid indiscriminate bush burning as the harmattan season begins, warning that the dry weather increases the risk of fire outbreaks across communities.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Information, Rt Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, issued the advisory in Ado Ekiti, urging government workers, traders, business owners and corporate organisations to prioritise safety and comply with fire prevention guidelines.
He noted that harmattan remains one of the most dangerous periods for fire incidents due to dry winds that allow flames to spread rapidly.
“The harmattan period is at hand when incessant fire outbreaks are experienced. For safety and control against fire disasters, residents are advised to avoid all actions that may fuel such incidents,” he said.
Olatunbosun highlighted risky habits such as bush burning, careless disposal of cigarette butts, smoking near flammable materials and misuse of candles or matches, warning that common domestic negligence, particularly in the kitchen, also contributes to many fire emergencies.
He added that the popular use of firecrackers during festivities often triggers panic and unintentional fires, stressing the importance of switching off electrical appliances, keeping flammable items away from heat sources and avoiding parking hot vehicles on dry grass.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to public safety, he said the Oyebanji administration has strengthened firefighting capacity through the provision of water facilities, new fire engines, upgraded stations and emergency hotlines to ensure swift response across the state.
