Ekong opens up on Super Eagles’ heartbreaking defeat to DR Congo
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has addressed Nigeria’s defeat to DR Congo, acknowledging that while the team “gave everything,” they ultimately fell short and must now confront the realities of an ageing squad and a concluded World Cup cycle.
Speaking for the first time since the loss, Ekong, who has been central to Nigeria’s defence for over a decade, said the team is disappointed but proud of the determination and fight displayed throughout a challenging qualification campaign.
“We pushed until the very last kick of the penalty shootout, but unfortunately, fate was not on our side,” he stated.
Ekong noted that Nigeria’s journey through the qualifiers was fraught with injuries, inconsistent performances, off-field disputes, and tactical adjustments under coach Eric Chelle. Despite these challenges, he affirmed that the squad remained united and committed to securing a place at the 2026 World Cup.
The captain acknowledged that at critical moments, the team’s best efforts were insufficient, particularly against a disciplined DR Congo side that capitalised on Nigeria’s lapses and defended with exceptional resolve in extra time.
Ekong also highlighted concerns regarding the squad’s age profile, admitting that several players are approaching the twilight of their international careers. He stressed that rebuilding will be essential ahead of the next World Cup cycle.
Looking ahead, he emphasised that the team will not dwell on disappointment. With the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled for December, the focus must shift to thorough preparation, addressing weaknesses, and ensuring Nigeria performs to expectations.
He concluded by thanking Nigerians for their unwavering support, acknowledging fans’ disappointment, and pledging that the team will strive to restore pride at the upcoming continental tournament in Morocco.
