The House Leader of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Barrister Oba Abdulkadir Magaji, has called on journalists nationwide to engage in constructive criticism of government policies to foster national growth, promote unity, and support sustainable development.

Speaking at a seminar organized by the Sobi FM chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), in collaboration with the Nigeria Media Parliament, Magaji emphasized the need for all levels of government to strengthen partnerships with the media as part of nation-building efforts and to promote good governance.

The seminar, themed “Nigeria Parliament and Nation Building: The Role of Media,” was held at the Sobi FM conference room and highlighted the media’s vital role in supporting democratic values.

“When you criticize the government, do it constructively in a way that builds the nation, promotes unity, and supports development,” he urged.

Magaji acknowledged journalists’ essential role in nation-building, alongside the contributions of the legislature, and advised against news reporting that could divide the country.

He emphasized that “any government, military or civilian, that wants to succeed must partner with the media in nation-building,” highlighting the importance of media unity and development-oriented reporting.

He further encouraged journalists to prioritize national interests when presenting critical views on government actions, noting that balanced reporting is crucial for sustaining peace and unity.

In his opening remarks, the Acting Chairman of the Sobi FM NUJ chapel, Kayode Adeoti, stated that the seminar aimed to enhance members’ understanding of parliamentary functions and their role in Nigeria’s nation-building process.

“The media serves as a vital bridge between the government and the public, promoting transparency and citizen engagement,” Adeoti said, adding that the training would empower journalists to report on parliamentary affairs and advocate for accountability in governance.

He emphasized that the seminar was designed to equip media professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to strengthen public understanding of parliamentary functions and support democratic governance in Nigeria.
