Eno inaugurates chairman of Akwa Ibom Traditional Rulers’ Council, pledges improved welfare

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has sworn in Akuku Saviour Sylvester Udofia, the Paramount Ruler of Abak Local Government Area, as the new Chairman of the State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers.

Speaking at the event held on Tuesday in Uyo, Governor Eno reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of traditional rulers, announcing that their monthly allowances will be reviewed upward starting October 1, 2025. He also approved the appointment of a personal assistant for each paramount ruler and revealed plans for a health insurance scheme to cover traditional rulers and their spouses.

The Governor highlighted past government support for the traditional institution, including the provision of official vehicles, quarterly healthcare packages, and ongoing medical interventions. He said these efforts reflect the government’s appreciation of the vital grassroots role traditional rulers play in maintaining societal harmony.

He urged the royal fathers to collaborate closely with their respective local government chairmen, acknowledging their constitutional authority. Governor Eno stressed the need for mutual respect and a harmonious working relationship to foster development and boost investor confidence.

Cautioning against traditional rulers demanding direct engagement with investors—especially in the oil and gas sectors—he said such actions could cause confusion and deter investors. Instead, he called for unity and clear role definitions between local government authorities and traditional institutions.

The immediate past chairman of the council, Odidem Etim Edet, was praised for his service, while the new chairman was encouraged to promote peace and unity throughout the state. Certificates of recognition were also presented to newly recognized traditional rulers during the event.

Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Frank Archibong, commended Governor Eno for his inclusive leadership and steadfast support of the traditional institution, describing the governor’s approach as one that promotes dignity, peace, and political tolerance.

In his remarks, the president-general of the council, Ntenyin Solomon Etuk, thanked the Governor for prioritizing the welfare of royal fathers through the prompt release of funds and urged the new chairman to build on his predecessor’s achievements in strengthening the traditional institution.
