Eno urges creative industry mentorship as Akwa Ibom hosts DGN at 25

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has called on the Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN) to be intentional about mentoring young creatives to ensure the sustainability of Nigeria’s entertainment industry. He made the call during a dinner held in honour of the Guild’s leadership, who were in the state to celebrate DGN’s 25th anniversary and participate in the State’s Entertainment Week.
Governor Eno commended Nollywood for showcasing the talent and creativity of Nigerians but warned that without deliberate efforts to groom the next generation, the industry risks losing relevance to global competition. He urged the state chapter of the Guild to reconnect with Akwa Ibom indigenes in the film industry and involve them in mentorship initiatives.
“As Governor, I am first the servant of Akwa Ibom people,” he said. “We need to reach out to our sons and daughters in the industry to support upcoming professionals and see Akwa Ibom as a great place to invest.” He added that the industry’s true strength lies in its ability to multiply talent through consistent mentorship and development.
As part of his administration’s support for the creative sector, Governor Eno unveiled plans to expand the state’s creative academy into a full-fledged creative village. He noted that such a facility would provide broader opportunities for young people, with the academy serving as just one component within a larger creative ecosystem.
In recognition of his support for the industry, DGN President Mr. Uche Agbo presented an award to the Governor, naming him a “Champion and Patron” of the Guild. Agbo praised the Governor for engaging more entertainment professionals in government than any previous administration, and for his commitment to youth development through the creative arts.
Mr. Agbo also assured that the Guild would collaborate with the state to train young people in technical and behind-the-scenes aspects of filmmaking. He highlighted the Guild’s founding 26 years ago as a body established to protect the interests and integrity of directors working across Nigeria and beyond.
Akwa Ibom’s Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Anietie Udofia, welcomed the DGN delegation and noted that the state was chosen for the anniversary celebration because of its peace, hospitality, and vibrant cultural heritage. He thanked the Governor for hosting the Guild and supporting the creative economy.
Nollywood actress Ms. Ebenezer Eno and the Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment, Mr. David Sergeant (Utang Akwa Ibom), also expressed appreciation to Governor Eno for his unwavering support for the creative industry and his vision to make Akwa Ibom a major hub for entertainment in Nigeria.
