Ensure swift action on national minimum wage decision, NECA tells FG

The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has issued a plea to the federal government, urging prompt action from the tripartite committee responsible for determining the national minimum wage.

The association expressed deep concern over the prolonged delay, warning that it is fueling agitation and distrust among stakeholders.

In a statement, NECA’s president, Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, highlighted the urgency for the committee to reconvene and finalize its decision.

He emphasized that the absence of recent meetings has escalated tensions between organized labor and certain state governors. Oyerinde emphasized that the proposed minimum wage of N615,000 by the National Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) has failed to garner consensus among state governors, exacerbating the situation.

While urging patience from both parties, Oyerinde stressed the importance of the tripartite committee’s deliberations, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive assessment of various factors.

He further advocated for adherence to the parameters outlined in the ILO Minimum Wage Fixing Convention 131 of 1970, which considers the needs of workers and economic realities in determining wage adjustments.
