Ethiopia bans importation of petrol, diesel vehicles for diplomatic missions

By Kunle Sanni

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia has implemented new regulations prohibiting the importation of petrol and diesel vehicles by Diplomatic and Consular Missions, as well as Regional and International Organisations operating in Addis Ababa.

This directive is a significant step in Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to combat climate change and accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources.

In a statement issued to all relevant missions and organisations, the Ministry underscored the urgent challenges posed by climate change and Ethiopia’s dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As part of this commitment, the importation of vehicles powered by internal combustion engines running on fossil fuels is now strictly prohibited.

Diplomatic entities and other privileged organisations are now required to import only electric vehicles, aligning with the current duty-free importation directives.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to international cooperation in its communication and extended its highest considerations to all Diplomatic and Consular Missions, as well as Regional and International Organisations based in Addis Ababa.
