EU, Nigeria move to deepen cooperation on trade, security

Nigeria and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in trade, investment and security following a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

The meeting, held on Monday at the President’s residence in Lagos, focused on expanding economic collaboration and addressing shared security concerns amid growing global economic and geopolitical uncertainties.

Speaking after the meeting, Kallas said both parties discussed opportunities to deepen cooperation in key sectors including trade, critical raw materials, security and cybersecurity.

“We are very like-minded partners, the European Union and Nigeria, and today we explored new ways to collaborate,” she said. “The global security situation is very serious as the geopolitical picture shows. That is why countries that value the international rules-based system must continue to work together.”

She added that discussions also covered investment opportunities and the potential for increased cooperation in strategic commodities.

President Tinubu, in his remarks, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with the EU and expressed appreciation for the union’s continued support.

The meeting was attended by the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, alongside members of the EU delegation.

The renewed engagement signals ongoing efforts by both Nigeria and the EU to build stronger economic and security ties as part of broader international cooperation.
