Former Nigerian international footballers have rallied behind the newly appointed National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko.
During a visit to the chairman ahead of the Shehu Dikko Novelty Match scheduled for tomorrow, the delegation expressed optimism that his tenure would herald a new era for Nigerian football and sports in general.
The delegation, comprising notable members of Nigeria’s “golden generation” of football—Samson Siasia, Mutiu Adepoju, and Victor Ikpeba—shared glowing remarks about Dikko’s capabilities.
Siasia, speaking first, said, “We are all excited about this appointment by the president. Dikko is one of us, and we have no doubt that things will improve under his leadership.”
Adepoju added, “Dikko will surely turn things around. We are here to support him and show our solidarity. I have worked with him at LMC/LaLiga, and I know what he can do. The president made the right decision with this appointment.”
Ikpeba echoed their sentiments, saying, “Honestly, this appointment is a perfect match. For the first time, we have someone who truly understands us and the industry leading the charge. Exciting times are ahead.”
The Shehu Dikko Novelty Match will feature Team Shehu Dikko against Team Nigeria, with participation confirmed by stars like Daniel Amokachi, Brown Ideye, Ahmed Musa, Garba Lawal, Ikpeba, Adepoju, Shehu Abdullahi, Siasia, and Victor Ezeji for Team Nigeria.
Team Shehu Dikko will include dignitaries such as Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata Fagge, NSC Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade, former Kano Sports Commissioner and ex-House of Representatives member Hon. Nuhu Danburam, who will captain the side, and former League Management Company COO Mallam Salihu Abubakar.
Event coordinator Chidi Okonkwo explained the significance of the match: “We organized this event to thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for this transformative appointment. It’s a milestone for sports in Nigeria, as this is the first time a leader with in-depth industry knowledge is heading the NSC.”
