Ex-Ooni’s wife, others reappear in court over Christmas stampede deaths

Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, Chairman of an Ibadan-based broadcasting station; and Abdulahib Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Basorun, appeared on Monday before the Chief Magistrate Court in Ibadan.

The trio are facing four charges, including conspiracy, murder, manslaughter, and negligence, following the tragic deaths of 35 children during a stampede at a Christmas funfair on December 18, 2024.

The defendants had previously been arraigned before the same court on a holden charge but were granted bail after their legal counsel argued that such a charge is not recognized under Nigerian law.

During Monday’s proceedings, the Chief Magistrate adjourned the case until March 24, 2025, for further mention.
