Ex-Super Eagles star Ejike Uzoenyi named among CHAN’s greatest

Former Nigeria international Ejike Uzoenyi has been recognized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as one of the standout players in the history of the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The former Rangers International of Enugu winger played a key role as the Super Eagles finished third at the 2014 edition of the tournament held in South Africa.
Previously, he was part of the Nigerian national team that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), showcasing his quality on both continental and global stages.
As the 2024 CHAN kicks off today, CAF took the opportunity to highlight some of the finest talents to have graced the competition, featuring Uzoenyi for his electrifying performances in 2014.
“In South Africa, Ejike Uzoenyi captured attention with his explosive pace and pinpoint deliveries from the left wing. The Nigerian winger was relentless throughout the tournament and was deservedly crowned MVP,” CAF wrote on its official website.
His exceptional showing during the tournament even earned him a place in Nigeria’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil—an impressive feat for a home-based player at the time.
CAF also celebrated other greats who have left their mark on CHAN over the years. These include DR Congo’s Tresor Mputu Mabi and Tunisia’s Zouheir Dhaouadi.
Meschack Elia stood out in the 2016 edition, while Morocco’s Ayoub El Kaabi and Soufiane Rahimi impressed in 2018 and 2020, respectively. Algeria’s Houssem Eddine Mrezigue earned the Best Player award at the most recent edition of the competition.
