The long-awaited Osun Intercollegiate Games 2024 kicked off on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in sports among tertiary institutions in Osun State.

The games began with athletic displays, football matches, and a dramatic tug-of-war competition, captivating the audience and fostering a spirit of friendly rivalry.

In football, the day started with an explosive encounter between Kings University, Ode Omu, and Osun State College of Health Technology, Esa-Oke. The latter triumphed with a commanding 4-1 victory.

The second match saw Obafemi Awolowo University secure a 2-0 victory over Oduduwa University. However, Oduduwa University found redemption in the tug-of-war competition, defeating OAU 2-0 in a nail-biting contest to advance to the next round.

Athletics also took center stage as teams competed fiercely in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 4x100m relay heats, with both male and female athletes impressing spectators with their speed and determination. The finalists for these events are set to compete for glory on the final day.

On Thursday, November 21st, the action shifts to Federal Polytechnic, Ede, where another round of intense football matchups is scheduled. Federal Polytechnic, Ede, will face Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, at 10 a.m., followed by a clash between the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila Orangun, and Fountain University at 12 p.m.

The opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries who emphasized the importance of the competition in fostering unity and development.

Representing the Deputy Governor of Osun State, Prince Kola Adewusi, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Special Needs, Mr. Layi Adesiyan, commended the organizers for their commitment to promoting collaboration among tertiary institutions.
