Details of the truce brokered in Abuja between suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his estranged political godfather and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike have finally emerged.
WESTERN POST can reveal today that under the agreement, Fubara will only serve one term in office.
To facilitate the truce brokered last week by President Bola Tinubu, the state of emergency slammed on the state under which the governor and the state House of Assembly were suspended will be lifted, and Fubara will return to office.
“But he will only complete the remainder of his tenure, as he will be limited to one term in office,” one associate of Fubara told WESTERN POST.
The governor has also been asked to keep at bay some of his associates who allegedly encouraged him to openly disagree with Wike, leading to a protracted leadership crisis. Mentioned in this respect are former Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Austin Opara, and Senator Lee Meeba, among others.
In exchange, the state House of Assembly controlled by Wike has also been directed to allow the governor to rule unencumbered. They are to back off from any impeachment moves.
However, despite the stringent nature of the conditions for lasting peace, the embattled governor, who described the truce as a divine intervention, has promised to devote his energy to sustaining peace in the state and has urged his supporters to follow suit.
Fubara fell out with his predecessor and benefactor following the struggle for the control of political structures in the oil-rich state.
The crisis which paralysed the smooth running of government, degenerated into violence with the state on the brink of a breakdown of law and order, prompting President Bola Tinubu to step in and declare a state of emergency on March 18 this year. Retired Naval Chief Ibok-Ette Ibas was subsequently appointed as sole administrator to bring back normalcy.
