Family officially releases statement on Peter Rufai’s demise

Hours after news of his death broke, the family of late Nigerian goalkeeping legend, Peter Rufai, has issued an official statement confirming his passing.
In the statement jointly signed by 11 family members—including his siblings and children—the family confirmed the time, cause of his death, and briefly reflected on his career.
“With total submission to the will of Almighty God, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the transition to glory of our father and brother, the legendary former Super Eagles goalkeeper, PRINCE PETER ‘DODO MAYANA’ RUFAI. He died at 6 a.m. on Thursday, 3rd of July, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 61 years old,” the statement read.
“Despite our shock and sadness at his sudden demise, we are extremely grateful to God Almighty for the impactful life he lived through a successful football career that made him world famous,” the family added.
Rufai began his journey with Sharks Football Club of Port Harcourt in the late 1970s, later rising through the national ranks to become Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup goalkeeper at USA ’94 and France ’98. He played at four Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, won 66 caps, and scored once for the national team.
He also had a successful club career spanning Nigeria, Benin Republic, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. After retirement, he returned home to establish Staruf Sports Development Limited, focusing on grassroots and youth development.
The family expressed appreciation to Nigerians at home and abroad for their overwhelming support and condolence messages. They promised to announce burial arrangements in due course.
The statement was signed by Yomi Bruce Rufai, Gladys Apata, Pastor Mrs. Bosede Rufai Lawson Jack, Dele Rufai Emizibo, Don Okikiola I. Rufai, Tunde Rufai, Confidence Rufai, Biodun Rufai, Bright Rufai, and David Rufai.
