FEC approves N557bn upgrade of National Hospital, cancer institute

The Federal Executive Council has approved contracts worth about N557.3 billion for the upgrade of the National Hospital, Abuja, and the construction of a new National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment.

The Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing State House correspondents after the council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Pate said the approvals covered four major projects at the National Hospital, estimated at about N255 billion, as well as the construction, furnishing and equipping of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment, valued at approximately N302.3 billion.

He said the projects were part of the administration’s efforts to strengthen tertiary healthcare infrastructure and expand access to specialised medical services.

“Today, council approved a number of very important projects in the health sector, particularly around the National Hospital and cancer care,” Pate said.

According to him, one of the projects is a new administrative and management building at the National Hospital, estimated at N18.74 billion.

The council also approved N64.92 billion for modular clinics and operating theatres for multiple medical specialties.

Another N103 billion was approved for a premium wing designed to expand the hospital’s clinical capacity. The project is expected to be completed within 24 months.

The fourth project is a dedicated neuroscience facility estimated at N69 billion.
